Host Alexandra Lydia discusses why International Women’s Day is so significant and three badass babes to follow if you want to be inspired this International Women’s Day!

At www.internationalwomen’sday.com they write, “International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.”

This movement does not belong to any specific organisation or place. It is simply a worldwide movement with two goals: first, to celebrate all women have done to bring good into this world, and second, to bring awareness to the fact that many people still deny the inherent worth of women.

The theme for this year is “Balance for Better.” The main website writes: “the future is exciting. Let's build a gender-balanced world. Everyone has a part to play - all the time, everywhere. From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence. Balance drives a better working world. Let's all help create a #balanceforbetter.”

In answer to the inevitable question, is International Women’s Day necessary? I say yes. Yes, yes, yes. Since it’s inception in 1911 to its continuation today, it is incredibly important. There is something powerful about saying, “ladies, this day is dedicated to YOU. May you may you be celebrated, may you be encouraged, may you be recognised. You are seen, you are heard, and we will never devolve back to a time when your stories were ignored.”

What can you do to celebrate this International Women’s Day? It’s simple, really. Recognise the women around you. Recognise the ways, both big and small, that they make your life better, and the lives of others better.

Happy International Woman’s Day!
